Natural Hot Springs and Onsen Hotels in Sapporo

Hokkaido is famous for its food, its nature, and its onsen. There are many renowned onsen towns like Noboribetsu Onsen, Toyako Onsen, Jozankei Onsen or Yunokawa Onsen. But did you know that there are even some natural hot springs directly in Sapporo?

I didn’t until recently. So I did some research and made a list of the best hot springs and onsen hotels in Sapporo that use natural spring water. If you’re looking for a nice hotel with onsen in Sapporo, you have come to the right place!

Let’s have a look at them together
(。⌒‐⌒。)♨️

Toukakyo

Jasmac Plaza Hotel Hot Spring Spa

Jasmac Plaza Hotel - Indoor Bath

Jasmac Plaza Hotel

Jasmac Plaza Hotel - Jacuzzi

Toukakyo is part of the Jasmac Plaza Hotel located in Susukino district and my personal favorite natural onsen in Sapporo. This is the go-to place if you want to forget about the city and feel like being in one of Hokkaido’s famous hot spring resorts like Yunokawa Onsen.

Here you can enjoy a great variety of different types of baths. Next to a large thermal hot spring bath, you’ll find a Japanese cypress rotenburo (open-air bath), and a so-called jacuzzi-event bath that can change colors.

The onsen also has 2 types of saunas, a high-temperature one and a low-temperature one. So you can choose and relax in the one that suits you the most.

The lukewarm water of the Susukino Hot Spring is gushing out from 800m below the surface and heated up to a comfortable bathing-temperature. The sodium content is a bit less compared to other springs, but nevertheless soaking in the water has a lot of benefits. Get rid of stiff shoulders, sore muscles, fatigue, prevent colds and many, many more.

The usual entrance fee for the onsen is ¥2,750 (including tax) but on your birthday and weekdays, you can enjoy a bath for just ¥1,650 until noon. Also, if you enter after 21:00 you can get a discount and get in for about ¥2,000.

If you are staying at the Jasmac Plaza Hotel, the onsen fee is already included in the room fee. However, a special bathing tax is still necessary. That’s why you have to pay an additional ¥150.

Another interesting option is their onsen + meal set. For just ~¥600 more to the regular entrance fee you can have a nice lunch set or dinner after bathing. They have a nice little menu where you can choose from. It’s in Japanese but with pictures, so give it a try!

Premier Hotel -CABIN- Sapporo - Indoor Bath

Inside the Premier Hotel -CABIN- Sapporo you can find the next onsen spa. It uses the same hot spring as Toukakyo – the Susukino Hot Spring, but the water somehow seems more muddy.

The premium spa facilities are gender-separated and have open-air baths, reclining baths, jet baths, and saunas. An interesting thing is that there is also a large TV. So you can enjoy Japanese TV shows while taking a bath. That’s also a first for me…
(/ω\*)

Of course, the hotel’s spa also offers several wellness services, such as massages or skin scrubs for complete relaxation. And they provide all the necessary amenities.

According to their website, the slightly salty natural spring water is good for health as well as beauty. It prevents sweating and chills after leaving the bath, so it is good to prevent colds. Also, soaking in the bath helps to relax stiff shoulders and sore muscles, etc.

Hotel guests of the Premier Hotel -CABIN- can use the natural hot spring bath spa for free from 13:30 all night through until 10:00. Day guests can use the spa only until 1:00 a.m. The entrance fee is ¥2,250.

And again, people with tattoos aren’t allowed in, unfortunately.

Hotel MYSTAYS Premier Sapporo Park - Indoor Bath

An extremely gorgeous and luxurious onsen experience you can have inside the HOTEL MYSTAYS PREMIER Sapporo Park. The gender separated bathing facilities have a nice open feeling to it and invite to staying for hours and hours.

Each spa has 3 different types of granite baths: thermal hot spring, a jacuzzi and a cold one. This time the men are lucky because they also have an open-air onsen! Unfortunately, there’s no rotenburo (open-air bath) in the women’s spa.

Besides the jacuzzi, all bathtubs are filled with the natural spring water of the Garden Spa Hot Spring. Since it’s a cold mineral spring, the water is heated up to a nice, comfortable temperature.

The benefits of this strong salt spring are washing away weariness and relieving chronic skin and women’s diseases. It also soothes cuts and burns.

There’s no explicit information about tattoos on the hotel’s website, but they may not be permitted.

Chateraise Gateaux Kingdom Sapporo

Chateraise Gateaux Kingdom Sapporo - Onsen Area

Chateraise Gateaux Kingdom Sapporo

Chateraise Gateaux Kingdom Sapporo - Pool Area

Chateraise Gateaux Kingdom Sapporo is a hotel and spa resort. The water paradise is located a bit outside of Sapporo and it takes about 1 hour to get there from Sapporo Station. So I wouldn’t really recommend you to stay here. However, it’s well worth a visit, especially if you love swimming or have children!

The onsen is huge and has 9 different types of baths in both the women’s and the men’s area. You can enjoy hot, low-temperature and cold thermal baths, a cypress bath, reclining baths, jacuzzis, a rotenburo and ceramic tubs outside and even more!

The spring water comes from the Yousei No Izumi Hot Spring (Fairytale Fountain Hot Spring). It’s also an earthy salt spring that is good for chronic skin diseases and women’s diseases.

Also, the sauna area is superb. You can either sweat in a normal sauna, a salt sauna or a steam sauna. Besides, you can try the ganban-furo (bedrock bath or stone sauna). However, it’s not included in the entrance fee and costs an additional ¥500.

Besides the huge onsen spa, there’s also a large swimming pool area with thrilling water slides. There are a variety of indoor and outdoor pools including a pool for kids and one for babies. The two water slides called Big River and Wild River are extremely popular among kids. You can enjoy swimming here all year round, however, the 2 outdoor pools are only open in summer (July and August).

If you just want to enjoy the onsen area the entrance is pretty cheap. Just ¥980. Otherwise, the fee is ¥1,700 (¥2,200 in July and August) and you can use the onsen as well as the swimming pool facilities.

Young children must be accompanied by a parent and tattoos are not permitted.

Karlovy Vary Spa

Hotel Monterey Edelhof Sapporo

Hotel Monterey Edelhof Sapporo - Wellness

Karlovy Vary Spa is the name of the onsen located on the 14th floor of Hotel Monterey Edelhof Sapporo. The hotel is easy to access and just a short walk away from Sapporo Station.

The gender-separated bathing areas have 3 indoor onsen baths including a jet bath, an open-air bath, and a sauna. There’s also a stone sauna called “Iyashi No Hana” that is popular among the female guests. It uses materials such as bryozoan fossil, unique to Hokkaido, and is equipped with a negative iron radiation therapy to help to rejuvenate your body. A 60 min session costs ¥1,620.

The name of the hot spring is the same as the spa’s: Karurobi Bari Supa Onsen (Karlovy Vary Spa Hot Spring). The name is derived from a real hot spring resort town in the Czech Republic that was popular among royals and nobles such as Mozart and Goethe in the 18th and 19th centuries. It’s also the inspiration for the elegant granite chiaroscuro artworks.

The isotonic alkaline spring is said to help with neuralgia, muscular pain, joint paint, stiff shoulders, skin diseases and all kinds of other health problems. So soak away your aches and pains and heal your body and mind while enjoying great city views.

Basic amenities like towels, shampoo, and soap are provided.
People with tattoos aren’t permitted to enter the onsen.

The onsen uses its own spring called Sapporo Yayoi Hot Spring. It’s a cold spring so the mineral water is heated up artificially. The health benefits of the earthy salt spring are similar to the before-mentioned ones. Easing neuralgia, sore muscles, etc.

One of the best things about this onsen is the price. For just ¥450 you can soak in the baths all day long.

The Sapporo Prince Hotel is conveniently located and nearby Odori Park. It offers a kinda nice but very basic hot spring facility exclusively for its guests. The onsen is gender-separated and equipped with a cozy indoor and outdoor bath. However, the open-air bath looks more like an indoor bath but has an open roof.

For the onsen, the spring water of the Sapporo-Odori Hot Spring is used. It’s a sodium chloride salt spring that helps to cure nerve pain, muscle ache, joint pain, and fatigue. The hot spring is natural, but mixed with normal water.

All necessary amenities like bath towels, soap, body soap, shampoo, etc. are provided by the hotel and included in the additional entry fee of ¥500. So you don’t need to bring them from your room.

Alex (RockinJapan)

Hey. I'm Alex. I've been living in Japan since 2015. Before moving to Tokyo, I traveled through Japan for 7 months to visit all 47 prefectures. Traveling and staying in Japan has been so much fun and such an incredible experience that I decided to write about it. I noticed there isn't a lot of information about hot springs and onsen towns in Japan, so I'm focusing on this topic. Hopefully, my articles will help you to get the most out of your trip and to fully enjoy your time in Japan! Alex
